Kimchi Jjigae

Kimchi Jjigae (Kimchi stew)

Welcome to K-food for the week! It’s your weekly newsletter posted every Thursday (Korean time), so that you can make your Friday dinner a little more special.

Kimchi Jjigae (김치찌개, read as kimchi-zzigae) is a famous drinking snack and dish that many Korean people enjoy.

Kimchi stew, known as Kimchi Jjigae to Korean people, looks like the cover image. The Kimchi is chopped into bite-size pieces and also there are Tofu and pork in it.

The taste of Kimchi Jjigae is a little bit sour. And there is fishiness because of Kimchi. It is umami and slightly salty. Surprisingly, it makes you wanna eat more. It’s quite spicy and tastes of chili so be warned if you cannot eat spicy food!

The best ways to eat Kimchi stew is eating it with rice. put the stew in your bowl and put rice inside it, then mix the stew with rice. Us Koreans call this 말아먹기(mal-ah-muk-gi) and it’s a local way of eating Kimchi Jjigae with rice.

Of course you can just eat a spoonful of rice and Kimchi stew separately.

Eating it with Soju is a nice combination. Soju and beer mixture (Somaek) is also a good choice. Eating with water or soft drink is fine too.

This was K-food for the week. I hope you have an amazing meal!
